As "The Girl From Ipanema" turns 40, Brazilians are celebrating the song that became a symbol of Rio and its laid-back, beach-loving lifestyle. A TV special about the song has run several times and a new book about bossa nova is planned to commemorate its first performance four decades ago.
The story goes that composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and his longtime collaborator, vinicius de Moraes, were sitting at a bar on Ipanema Beach when young Helo Pinheiro walked by and inspiration struck. The result was "The Girl From Ipanema," and the song, with its blend of jazz, samba, and subtle, haunting harmonies, became an instant hit. "This is a date which Brazilian musicians consider fundamental to the spread of the Brazilian sound worldwide," said Carlos Alberto Afonso, owner of the cafe and music store where the concert took place.
In 1964, an English version by singer Astrud Gilberto and saxophonist Stan Getz was released and quickly climbed to No. 5 on Billboard magazine's hit parade. It was nominated for seven Grammy awards and won four, including best single, beating out the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand." Nearly 200 artists have since performed renditions of the song, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nat "King" Cole, Mel Torme, Al Jarreau and Kenny G.
"The Girl From Ipanema" also was the high-water mark of bossa nova's popularity. It soon was supplanted by other musical styles in Brazil, but it retains a core of devoted fans.
Veteran composer Billy Blanco hopes the anniversary is a new beginning. "[This] feels like a wedding to me," Blanco said. "A wedding of the past with the present, a wedding of bossa nova with the Brazilian people once again."

Beard made her first Olympic appearance at the 1996 games at the age of 14. She won silver medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststrokes, and a gold in the medley relay. Her young-teen manner captured the attention of the media, and she was often photographed clutching her teddy bear which joined her on the medal stand. She won a bronze medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2000 Games. Amanda attended the University of Arizona where she captured an individual NCAA National Championship in 2001.
In 2003 she became the world champion and world record holder in the 200m breaststroke. She also made a good showing at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials, and she competed in the 2004 Olympic Games, where she won a gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke, her first individual gold medal. She also won a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley, and she finished fourth in the 100-meter breaststroke.

He advised her to go away, get some qualifications and try again when she was older. So, that was a 'no' then? Well, actually, it was a resounding yes. Gabby trotted off to Durham University to study law, landed an invite to Steve Cram's New Year Eve party and met a programme controller of Newcastle's Metro FM. Never backward in coming forward, Gabby said 'Gizza job' and before she could to a triple back flip she landed a three year deal - and the first-ever interview with Ryan Giggs for the university newspaper. How's that for starters? But Gabby Yorath had more than Giggsy on her mind. she wanted to make it big time - without having to live in the shadow of her famous dad, Terry.

Gabby Logan (born Gabrielle Nicole Yorath on 24 April 1973) is a British television presenter and former Welsh international gymnast. She currently presents for BBC Sport, mainly on football.
She is the daughter of former Wales international football player and manager Terry Yorath. Aged 10, she decided she wanted to present the BBC's nightly news programme Newsnight. Logan's university education was at Hild Bede College, Durham University, where she read Law.
Logan played netball for the school and at university, competed at high jump, but the peak of her sporting career was when she gained eighth place in Rhythmic gymnastics representing Wales at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. She had to retire from gymnastics aged 17 due to sciatica. She attended Bishop Ullathorne RC School in Coventry.

She is the daughter of former Wales international football player and manager Terry Yorath. Aged 10, she decided she wanted to present the BBC's nightly news programme Newsnight. Logan's university education was at Hild Bede College, Durham University, where she read Law.
Logan played netball for the school and at university, competed at high jump, but the peak of her sporting career was when she gained eighth place in Rhythmic gymnastics representing Wales at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. She had to retire from gymnastics aged 17 due to sciatica. She attended Bishop Ullathorne RC School in Coventry.
After university she presented on Metro Radio in Newcastle, from where she was offered a job as a presenter on Sky Sports.

She was told that she would appear in rival ITV series Dancing on Ice, which returned on 13 January 2007, but refused to take part However, following her switch to the BBC in 2007, she agreed to take part in Strictly Come Dancing in the same year. One of her opponents for the competition was her husband, Kenny Logan. Kenny is dancing with professional dancer Ola Jordan and Gabby was partnered with Ola's husband James Jordan. Gabby was voted out of the series in week 4.
In October 2006, the Daily Mirror reported that the BBC was interested in signing her up for their sports coverage, following her fall from favour at ITV. On 19 December 2006 it was announced that Logan had quit ITV, in favour of a move to the BBC in a three year deal.
Logan now fronts Inside Sport an all new sports news show, and covers live sport events. She also works on BBC Radio 5 Live. She currently presents the Gabby Logan show on Saturday mornings. Logan started presenting on BBC Sport on 27 January 2007, presenting the FA Cup fourth round tie between Luton Town and Blackburn Rovers.

Olivia Munn (born July 2, 1982) is an American actress, model and television personality. She began her career being credited as Lisa Munn, however, since 2006, she has been using the name Olivia Munn professionally. Since 2006, Munn has been one of the faces of the cable network G4, hosting a number of shows for the network, however, the most prominent being Attack of the Show!, with co-host Kevin Pereira.
Lisa Olivia Munn was born in Oklahoma on July 2, 1982 to mother Kim Munn and father Sam Munn; she is of Chinese descent on her mother's side and of Caucasian descent on her father's. At the age of two, Munn's mother re-married to a man in the Air Force, and shortly after, they relocated. Although the family had relocated many times, Munn was predominantly raised in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, Japan, where the military assigned her stepfather. During this time, she had appeared in a number of local theater productions, and later became a model within the Japanese fashion industry.
Munn moved back to the United States, settling in Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. In 2004, she interned at Fox Sports Net and worked as a sideline reporter for college football and womens’ basketball. She has gone onto say that she disliked the experience, explaining "I was trying to be something I wasn’t, and that made me really uncomfortable on live TV." Davis was born in Wareham, Massachusetts to Lucille, a teacher's assistant, and William Davis, a civil engineer. One of the first signs of her interest and skill in the performing arts was her budding talent in music. She learned piano, flute and drums. She played organ well enough as a teenager to serve as an organist at her church in Wareham. Enrolling at New England College, Davis eventually graduated with a bachelor's degree in drama from Boston University in 1979. While an exchange student in Sandviken, Sweden, Davis became fluent in Swedish.
After graduating, Davis signed with New York's Zoli modelling agency and served as a window mannequin for Ann Taylor.
